End of the Season Summary What a great year! I don't think we really appreciate how well we have things. We have 14 great girls. We have (with the exception of Scott) a great group of parents. We have a fabulous coach and a club that is small enough to deal with us on a personal level and large enough to provide first rate training. I do want to say something about the girls. Holly - I don't know if you realize how good you are. You had an interesting start of the year with all of the keeper movement, but I can tell you I wouldn't trade you for anyone we played against. I also wouldn't want any other keeper facing down a PK. Sydney R. - As your father, I'm so proud of you. Don't tell Emily but you're my favorite player. I loved seeing you improve from game to game. You're so strong with the ball and so smart...just a pleasure for me to watch you play. Miranda - Wow you are fast. Your speed sometimes makes me forget how skilled you are. You bring a great attitude to the team and are so much fun to watch when chasing down a forward who thinks they are 1 on 1 with the keeper. Kelsey - You really are one of the anchors on this team. You make so few mistakes in a position where if you do make a mistake, it can often lead to goals. You don't get the glory, but you play a significant roll in every win. Samantha - You are special to me. I enjoyed being your rec coach and seeing you develop despite me. Now I enjoy seeing you develop under someone who knows what they are talking about! I will say I never realized how tough you are. You team that up with your skill with the ball and you are a terror. Nicole - Another very special player to me (ex-player). You are so athletic on the pitch that I don't think there is anything that you will not be able to do playing soccer. You are so unselfish on the field (always looking to pass) and such a great person off the field. Sydney M. - You are such a tough player. You don't back down, you look to pass and you have a great leg. It's so easy to get lost playing midfield, but I always seem to notice your play. Meagan G. - You can dominate games. Not sure you realize this. Your vision and playmaking skills are exceptional. You may have the biggest leg on the team and are always dangerous on the set pieces. Abby - You had a tough year with the injury. I look forward to you staying healthy. You are such a good player and a pleasure to watch. I do have to say what a great captain you are. I'm not sure many girls would come out to practice and games when you foot is in a cast. You did this...what a leader. Maggie - The other captain that also shared some pain this year. I'm about to remove your siblings from the household so you can stay healthy, but I can't find anyone who wants them! Maggie, you also came out to practices and games when you couldn't play...very impressive! As for the field, you may be one of the smartest players on the pitch. You make the right passes and always seem to be in the right spot. Oh, and you have a great shot at the top of the box. Meagan N. - I think you may be the most improved player this season. Every game I notice your play more and more. You are tough on the ball and you never back down from a 50/50 ball. You're hard nosed around the goal and you get your share of goals. Rachel - I couldn't write this without saying, "Tie your shoes!" You are quite fun to be around. You have a good sense of humor and you always have a smile on your face. On the pitch you are a joy. Tough with the ball, great speed and a killer finish. You were one of our leading scorers and I only expect more from you next year. Jennie - One of our top 2 scorers. I know it is so hard to play the game when you are expected to score every time you touch the ball. It's important that you don't get down on yourself. You are such a special player. Great speed, great finish with a nice touch of passing mixed in. Emily - As I'm sure you are thinking, "I must have saved the best for last", right? O.K., don't tell Sydney R. but you're my favorite. You sure are fast. When you get that ball with a step on the defender, you are tough to catch. You continue to add skill and vision to your game, which will only make you stronger. I love it when you and Jennie are crossing balls to each other. Oh, and you don't lack for confidence! Each of you girls are so special to all of the Odyssey parents. We are family. I trust each of you girls to be good friends to my daughter, and I trust each of the parents (except Scott) to be great role models for her as well. You had a great year and I know it will only get better! Go Odyssey! - Rob PS - Scott is actually O.K., too. Austin Spring Classic Summary: Finalist Finished pool at 2-1-0 (17 points). Team had 1 shutout, 4 goals scored and 3 gives. It was definitely a fun trip. Nice hotel, good weather, cool pool...good times. I know the girls had fun roaming the halls, hanging out and hitting the movies one night. We had a great lunch on Sunday at a bar-b-que place where you can leave your shoes on the table while you eat. There was a great view, talking dead animals and three very hungry "Big Daddy" meals - Scott, David and Jackie. I do need to get those pictures posted! The games were good and even though the tournament didn't end well, there were far too many positives than negatives. Houston Dynamos (05/29/06) - Finals Rematch from the game before. I could write a lot about this one but will control myself. In the end the girls fought very hard on a very hot and humid day. Both teams were about even in this one and they should be very proud of their effort. A non-call that resulted in an injury to Holly led to the only goal of the game (Dynamos win 1 to nil). It also led to some fireworks on the sidelines. (Not saying anything more about that.) ESPN MOMENT: Holly - one of the things I will always remember from this season is you getting run over and still having the guts to get up and get back on your line when you were hurt. That may have been my proudest "moment" of the year! Houston Dynamos (05/28/06) - Pool Game #3 The Dynamos came to play in this one and Odyssey did not. The final was a 1 to nil loss that could have been worse. The girls got an earful from Paul after this one. Pool play ended with Odyssey in a tie for 2nd with the Capitals. With our head-to-head victory against them, it meant that our girls secured a spot in the finals. ESPN MOMENT: Maggie had a couple of chances in this one at the top of the box. Although she couldn't net any of them, she had a strong game to earn the "moment". Austin Capitals (05/27/06) - Pool Game #2 Very close game that had tie written all over it. Holly and the defense did a great job preventing the Capitals from scoring. In the second half, a poor goal kick came to Meagan G. and she promptly scored over the keepers arms for the game's only goal. With the Capitals beating the Dynamos earlier in the day, it looked like these two teams would meet again in the finals. ESPN MOMENT: Abby made a nice block of a Capital shot in the box to help preserve the tie. Texas Lightning (05/27/06) - Pool Game #1 We travel down to Austin to get the chance to play an Arlington team! Oh well, the girls made quick work of them to start the tournament off right. Final was 3 to 1. The first goal started with a nice cross by Maggie that Rachel was unable to shot from. She moved the ball over to Meagan N. who was all alone for the left footed score. Emily scored the next two. Her first goal was started by Kelsey who fed Meagan G. who delivered a perfect long ball to Emily. The last goal was from a Meagan G. corner kick. The ball went to Emily who had an easy time beating the keeper. The Lightning scored late in the game but it wasn't enough. Keepers for this one were Holly, Maggie, Sydney M and Rachel. ESPN MOMENT: Meagan N. gets the award for the first goal of the tournament and a fine aggressive overall game. Keller Classic (U12 Division) Summary: 3rd Place Finished pool at 1-1-1 (12 points). Team had 1 shutout, 2 goals scored and 3 gives. I've been slow to post the tournament summary for this one. It was three and done for this tournament (the first time ever this has happened to this team). Of course, the girls were playing up an age group. Special thanks to Tracie for coming out as a guest. My main memory from this tournament was the perfect shot from Jennie in the upper corner to secure a win. It was nice to play a tournament where we didn't have to drive an hour to get to the game. Great effort by all of the girls! Freedom (05/21/06) - Pool Game #3 Our girls were not so lucky playing another 95 team. They ended up losing 2 nil, but controlled about 75% of the action. Odyssey sniffed the goal numerous times but couldn't get anything in. Tracie played a strong game in this one guesting for us. Thanks for coming out! A disappointing game but a solid weekend against the older teams. ESPN MOMENT: Sydney M. gets the "moment" in this one. She really played a great tournament. In this game she played mid and defense and did both very well. Always seemed to be first to the loose ball and made some smart crisp passes. Alliance 94 (05/20/06) - Pool Game #2 Another 94 team was on the schedule. The girls played strong all game and came away with a 1 to nil victory. The goal started with a nice pass from Sydney M. to Jennie who buried the shot into the right corner. The defense played strong for the shutout. Both Miranda and Sydney swept balls out of the box in this game. Emily played a strong game and made some nice crosses. Maggie got a yellow card in this game. ESPN MOMENT: Two words - "Wow Emily!" Amazing game by Emily in this one. She didn't put in a goal but was dominate up front. She had some incredible crossing balls and just missed on numerous chances. Odyssey East 94 (05/20/06) - Pool Game #1 Our first tournament game against another Odyssey team! Our girls had the wind to start with and it helped with our only goal of the game. A punt by the keeper dropped in front of Rachel who quickly shot the ball at the net for the score. The 94's would come back with the wind in the second half. A nice shot over Holly's arms scored the tying goal. It was a good effort by our girls playing a tough older team. Final was 1 to 1. Sydney R. got a yellow card in this game. ESPN MOMENT: I don't usually give the "moment" to a person who scores but I thought Rachel really played a great all around game today. She was heavily involved in the action and played strong on the ball all game. Great job! North Texas Strikers Spring Challenge VII Summary: Champions! Finished 1st in pool at 3-0-0 (29 points). Defeated FC Dallas for the championship. Team had 4 shutouts, 12 goals scored and 1 give. I'm going to keep the summary short this time around. I think a 12 goal to 1 give ratio kind of speaks volumes about the level of play from the girls this weekend. I special thank you to Hannah for coming out and playing with the girls. I'm sure you were a little nervous but you did well and we hope you had fun! It was good to see some girls score for the first time and to see all of the girls enjoy a fun tournament after a tough spring season. I hope that all of the girls that had a chance to play up front realize how tough it is to score (and these weren't Lake Highland D2 teams either). Hopefully the girls that got to play in the back for the first time in awhile also realize how tough defense is. The thing I took from this tournament is just how special all of the girls are and how I just keep enjoying seeing them grow as a team. Keller Classic is next! Let's win our home tournment! FC Dallas (04/15/06) - Finals FC Dallas upset the Strikers to make the finals. Our girls controlled almost all of this game although the final score would be only 1 nil. Maggie made a nice pass to Jennie who made a long run up the right side. She was able to shield off the defender and finish the shot for the game winner. Paul moved the girls around in this one but the two constants were Kelsey (sweeper) and Holly (keeper). Nothing got by them as they did their usually great job. Great win for the girls to win the tournament! ESPN MOMENT: Kelsey played great all game. Still, no reason to give her the "moment". She played the whole game and nothing got by her. Still, no reason to give her the "moment". She gets the "moment" because she asked! Well, that and the other stuff, too. Just another outstanding job in the back...you are a joy to watch play. Blackwatch (04/15/06) - Semifinals This was the game of the tournament. The girls were up against a Lake Highlands team and boy was the wind blowing! The girls started with the wind but Blackwatch was tough. They controlled about 50% of the first half. Just when it looked like the girls would waste the wind, they got a free kick outside of the box when Sydney M. was taken down from behind. Meagan G. took the kick and hit a shot under the crossbar for the score. Rachel had a nice shot earlier in the half but the keeper made a great save on the ball. In the second half, Blackwatch had a great chance in the box after a corner kick but were unable to convert. Just when it looked the game would end with a 1 nil victory, the referee gave Blackwatch a free kick outside of our box. They were able to convert with no time left in the game to send this one to overtime. The girls had the wind to start the OT and it would be another Meagan G. free kick that would put the girls on top. Blackwatch was unable to convert after that and the game ended 2 to 1. Meagan N. received a yellow card in this one for delay of game. ESPN MOMENT: Samantha and Rachel get this one. Rachel played a strong game and had some chances. Samantha played a strong D and was able to sweep the ball out of the box when it was needed most. Texas Longhorns White (04/15/06) - Pool Game #3 The girls jumped all over the Longhorns early. They scored all 4 goals in the first half as the game ended 4 nil. Emily got the first two goals - the first with a chip shot over the keeper and the second with a strong left foot. Meagan G. got the third goal as she was able to bend the ball in from her corner kick. Samantha scored the final goal with a nice finish. Assists for the game went to Nicole, Meagan N., Sydney M., Maggie and Hannah. Hannah? That's right we had some help during this tournament. It was nice to see a full bench. In fact there was barely room for Paul to lay down during the games! ESPN MOMENT: This one goes to Hannah. A big Odyssey thank you for coming out and playing with the girls. We hope you had a blast. You did well in each game and was even able to notch an assist in this one. Great job! North Texas Strikers Frisco (04/14/06) - Pool Game #2 Maggie got the start in goal. It took Holly all year to figure out that she just needs to arrive late to a game in order to play the field. I can't remember which players played keeper in which games so for the record; Holly, Maggie, Meagan N., Sydney M. and Nicole all played goal at some point during the tournament. The girls picked up their play in this one and scored a little earlier much to the relief of the parents. The first two goals were almost identical as Jennie made a great cross to Emily for the score and then Emily returned the favor for Jennie. The final goal of the game went to Samantha who got to play a little forward in this one. Assists for the game went to Rachel and Jennie on the first one. Meagan G and Emily on the second goal. Kelsey got the assist on the final goal on a great run up the sidelines. She covered almost the entire field before crossing to Samantha. Meagan N., playing keeper, got the 2nd assist with the pass to Kelsey. Final was 3 nil. ESPN MOMENT: I've got to go with Jennie and Emily. The crossing passes they made early in this game were amazing! FC Dallas (04/13/06) - Pool Game #1 I don't want to write what I was thinking watching this game. How about a great last 5 minutes! Seriously, the girls dominated FC Dallas all game but were unable to cash in. I counted 19 shots by the Odyssey girls to only 1 from FC Dallas. It took the last 5 minutes of the game to see results as Maggie centered a throw-in that bounced to the top of the box. Miranda, getting to play something other than central defense, swooped in a buried a bullet of a shot over the keepers head for the goal. A couple of minutes later it was Maggie with the bullet to make the final score 2 nil. Meagan G. and Jennie assisted on the final goal. It was a slow start to the tournament but better things were to come.
ESPN MOMENT: It was going to be Miranda before she scored the goal. She made some nice passes out of the back and from the midfield position. Of course, it doesn't hurt to score the game winning goal, either. It was Miranda's first goal of the season as she doesn't get a lot of chances playing central defense. Lake Highlands Division II (Spring) Summary: Final Spring record was 0-3-6 (6 points). Team had 2 goals and 5 gives. Team had 5 shutouts. Our second Lake Highlands season didn't turn out as well as we hoped. A number of injuries and a short bench combined with not much luck did us in. Still the girls played each team tough and there is not much difference between this team's finish and a finish in the top 2. On behalf of the parents, we are still very proud of each of you and look forward to next season! Starting with Holly as she had a great season. Another 5 shutouts in league play. She had great saves against East Texas and really kept is in all of the games. The defense also share in those 5 shutouts. Sydney R. on the left continued her strong play. She's adding a level of toughness that's nice to see. Kelsey was again fabulous in the middle. She just doesn't miss much back there and is really the anchor of the defense. Miranda again used her great speed to run down any forwards that got loose. She continues to improve all areas of her game and is a joy to watch. Samantha played a full season on the right and is she ever trouble for the forwards. A great mix of toughness, skill and heart. Abby had a slow start due to the injuries but you can see how much determination she had to get back on the pitch. She's about full speed again and you can really see how much we missed her. Maggie also had injury problems and she also played through the pain. She did more than most adults would have! I always say what a smart player she is and she always seems to have her head up looking for the pass. You also saw some great shots late in the year from her and once fully healthy these will turn into goals. Meagan G. really had some games that she just flat out controlled in the middle. Very big leg and great passing ability. She also did a great job helping out on defense when needed. Nicole was another player that had to help out when needed due to injuries. Great job as sweeper against the Tejanos. Never complains and always puts out a great effort. Always does real well in the scrums and with the 50/50 balls. Sydney M. had another fine season. Strong physical player with a great leg. Plays any position well. Rachel had a couple of stellar games this season. Strong player on the ball and one of our best finishers. Meagan N. continues to improve her game. Always a tough player but is also showing a lot of skill on the ball and is good around the net. The forwards (Emily and Jennie) had a tough time scoring but the defenses they go up against are just getting so strong. They do a great job running down the ball with their excellent speed. They have also improved with their touches and their 50/50 balls. Great efforts by both this season! Once again, on behalf of the parents it is so much fun watching you each play and grow your skills together. Keep practicing and playing hard and we'll keep cheering. Remember, win or lose; we love you! Go Odyssey! Here are the league game summaries: Tornados White (4/02/06) - Game #9 Had to miss this one so I'll keep it short. Just another typical league game for the girls. It was reported that they played well but couldn't net their shots. The team gave up one goal for the loss. Another example on how close this team is with the other teams in the league. Just another "unlucky" game for the girls. ESPN MOMENT: It was a tough season but all of the girls did well in this one - each get the "moment". All season they had to overcome injuries and a short bench. Each game they played tough and never gave up. East Texas Spirit (3/25/06) - Game #8 Odyssey had a strong first half but was unable to score. The girls had good pressure on the ball and seem to be in control for most of the half. We had shots by Sydney M., Maggie, Meagan N., Nicole and Meagan G. Maggie actually had a number of chances but was unable to convert against a strong defense. Late in the first half East Texas was able to get free at the top of the box for a hard shot that Holly saved. The rebound went to the right and was cashed in by another Spirit player. This would be the only goal in the game. The girls didn't play as well in the second half. We did have some chances with Maggie and Rachel having the best chances. Holly made some tremendous saves in this one to keep the game as close as it was. ESPN MOMENT: I may have to rename this award for Holly! East Texas was able to get off some good shots that Holly was able to turn away. Holly had one where she had to crawl to get the ball and another that she had to punch over the cross bar. I counted 4 great saves in the second half. Solar Blue (3/20/06) - Game #7 Nothing like having 6 hours to prepare for a game in Frisco! The girls came out strong in this one. Odyssey had the wind in the first half and was able to get off the most shots (Jennie, Samantha, Abby and Nicole all had at least one shot). Solar was only able to mount one serious attack but it was a good one. They freed up a forward and it was only Holly left. Holly came off her line forcing the Solar player to take the shot. Holly made the save and Sydney R. was able to sweep it away. In the second half, Solar had the most chances. Holly had a couple of more good saves. We did have shots by Maggie, Emily and Sydney M. Maggie had a good chance in the box but Solar was able to get to the ball. All the girls played tough in this one (special kudos to Maggie, Samantha, Meagan N. and Abby for maxed out efforts). ESPN MOMENT: I had one of the parents suggest Holly for this one. You have to be very good to win two "moments" in a row! Great saves to keep us in this one. Best save of the season in the first half. I also want to give Abby a "moment". She continues to get better and better after her injury. She was really flying at the ball today and winning a lot of 50/50 balls. Texans Red South (3/11/06) - Game #6 Had to miss almost half of this, but the reports weren't good. The girls did not play with the same aggressiveness as they did against Spirit and it showed with their lack of scoring chances. The Texans had a near miss 10 minutes in and really controlled the game for the most part in the first half. In the second half, Odyssey again played poorly to start with before picking up their play later in the game. The Texans did have a few good chances but Holly came up strong to keep them out of the net. Odyssey did have shots in the 2nd half by Jennie, Rachel, Meagan G. and Maggie. Meagan G. really did a nice job in the midfield trying to work the ball forward. In the end this was a game the girls needed but were lucky to escape with a tie. 0 to 0. ESPN MOMENT: Holly gets this one. She pitched a shutout and made a couple of nice saves in the process. Spirit North (3/8/06) - Game #5 Weekday game in Frisco with storms approaching. Thankfully we got the game in and spring break travel plans were kept. The game started slowly for the Blue. Spirit North got a couple of free kicks early but Holly made the easy saves. Odyssey was playing very tough and were winning most of the 50/50 balls. We also committed a number of hard fouls but it as good to see the aggressiveness. Midway through the first half, Emily was able to spring free for a breakaway. She got the ball into the box and was taken down from behind - no call. The resulting corner did offer up three good chances (Sydney M. short, Rachel blocked and Maggie wide right). The play was back and forth from there with Odyssey getting good pressure on the ball. Towards the end of the first half, Meagan N. made a nifty move and was able to pass the ball forward to Maggie. Maggie found Rachel with a great pass and she finished it strong for the 1 to nil lead. The second half started like the first. Spirit North had 5 free kicks each resulting in a save by Holly before Odyssey's first shot of the half. Spirit did come out stronger and they were able to control more of the action. Odyssey did have a good scoring chance when Emily crossed the ball to Meagan N. but the keeper made a nice save. It looked like the game would end with Blue on top, but a Spirit North came back in injury time. A throw in, a couple of crossing balls and a great finish tied the game 1 to 1. Great effort by the girls but a hard way to tie. ESPN MOMENT: Kelsey and Sydney R. get the "moment" for this game. Strong defensive play all game. Kelsey made half a dozen important sweeps including a nice slide tackle. Sydney R. seems to be making a number of new moves to gain space and did sweep away a Spirit North free kick after a scramble in the box. Solar White (3/5/06) - Game #4 Another showdown with Solar White. It was nice to see a full roster for the first time in a very long time. The girls came out strong in this one. Although the game was played pretty even, Odyssey would get most of the scoring chances. Emily was able to break free for a run early in the game but was caught from behind before getting off a good shot. Solar had a chance in the first half off a free kick but Holly made the save. The rest of the first half was back and forth with no other real good chances for either side. In the second half, Maggie made a nice move splitting three defenders and getting a good shot off that was saved. Nicole also had a shot that was blocked after getting the ball at the top of the box. Meagan G. had a chance off a free kick but it hit the side of the net. And then there was Rachel. Oh, I was already out of my seat on this one. Late in the game there was a mad scramble in front of the Solar White net. The ball got crossed and there was Rachel with the one timer. Great shot but just inches high as it sailed over the crossbar. The game would end 0 to 0. ESPN MOMENT: Maggie gets the "Moment" for this game. It had to be tough on her to wait out her injury but she was able to come back strong this weekend. Great play splitting three defenders in order to get the shot off in the 2nd half. Tejanos Classic (3/4/06) - Game #3 Boy did I feel good about this game! Then I see Kelsey limping towards me without her shoes! Then I can't find Miranda! Then Sydney R. leaves the field 2 minutes BEFORE kickoff! With 3/4 of the defense down, this game was looking bleak and the ball wasn't even in play! I don't know how Paul knew all this was going to happen, but he was smart to leave this game to Paddy. Once the game got started, the girls showed they were ready to play. With the wind at their backs, Odyssey controlled most of the first half. A nice shot on goal by Samantha led to an Odyssey goal. The keeper was unable to control the ball and Emily was able to move it away from her enough for Jennie to finish the job. A garbage goal but it sure looked pretty. A little while later the Tejanos had about their only chance in the half with a run down the right side. A couple of passes later and it was just Holly left to face down the forward. Holly came out but the shot was well placed. The game would end 1 to 1 but not before Kelsey was forced into the game (thanks dad!) as a forward. Some pretty passes got the ball to Kelsey but she was unable to convert on the shot. It was a nice play and a nice run by Kelsey. As Paul would say, "Unlucky". ESPN MOMENT: The "Moment" goes to Meagan G. and Nicole. Both players got pushed into the central defense positions and played well the entire game. Meagan G. had some amazing hard kicks and Nicole swept away a number of balls all game. Great job filling in girls! WF Xpress (2/12/06) - Game #2 Second game in two days and the wind was back. This time it blew across the pitch for the most part but in both halves it seemed to favor our girls slightly. Too bad that was about the only thing that was favoring our girls as they dropped this game 2 nil. WF Xpress played well and controlled the majority of this game. Odyssey didn't come out to play for this one and it cost them in the standings. This game could have been worse if not for some good saves by Holly. I don't want to dwell too much on this one. Hopefully the girls can get focused for next week and Solar White. They did start to play better after getting down by 2 goals. ESPN MOMENT: I think Paul has to get this one. The parents got their second "Solar" speech of the year so at least we can give him the "Moment". Andromeda (2/11/06) - Game #1 The first game of the spring season saw Odyssey taking on Andromeda, which had been dropped from Division I, and strong winds, which was dropping chairs across the field. The girls got the wind to start the game and exerted plenty of pressure the entire half. Unfortunately, they were unable to push across a goal. The second half saw Andro with the wind and the pressure. They did have some chances but the defense and Holly were up to the challenge. Both Sydney R. and Miranda swept away potential scores. Kelsey and Samantha played great as well in their defensive rolls. Odyssey also had some chances in the second half and overall slightly controlled more of the action for the game. During the game, Jennie and Sydney M. each had great shots on goal and Rachel had a chance in the box that was blocked. Meagan G. also had a free kick chance on goal that wasn't converted. Holly did well to face down two 1 on 1 chances. On the first she came out which froze the shooter until the defense recovered. On the second, Miranda came back and got a piece of the shot and it went to Holly for the save. Final was 0 to 0 but it was another top team that the girls played well against. ESPN MOMENT: Keeping in mind that I try to give these awards for defensive efforts and this was a defensive game, I gave the node to Sydney R. in this one. She had a solid game with two critical stops in the second half. Winter Cup Summary: Finalist. Finished 1st in pool at 3-0-0 (25 points). Lost to WF Xpress Red in the finals. Team had 3 shutouts, 5 goals scored and 4 gives. Tough tournament! The team went in with significant injuries and a short bench and suffered more injuries by the end. On the field, the girls started slowly but continued to play better each game. This was the second tournament in a row where Holly was needed to win a semifinals game on PKs. Holly didn't get to see a lot of shots during the tournament but did great throughout. The defense was outstanding in limited those shots. Sydney R. had an outstanding tournament on the left side. Her best game was against the Strikers where she shut down their forward. Good job on the PK. Kelsey was fabulous in the opening game and was the biggest reason for that shutout. Her slide tackles are another weapon the opposing forwards need to watch for. Miranda's best game was against Xpress White. She was all over the forwards and had a nice run to the goal (unlucky not to score). I can't say enough about Samantha. Playing most of the tournament with "the claw" shows her heart and desire to win. Great game against Xpress Red. The midfielders did well to control most of the games. Meagan G. was outstanding against the Tejanos. She always seem to be in control and looking for options during the tournament. Good job on the PK. Rachel played a really strong tournament. She was very aggressive and won a ton of 50/50 balls. Her best game was against Tejanos. Sydney M. had some great crosses and played a good physical game throughout. Strongest game was against the Tejanos. Good job on the PK. Meagan N. was the leading scoring in this tournament. Strong games throughout but I liked the Xpress White game the best (great goal). For awhile no one could score without Nicole passing them the ball. Best game was against the Xpress White (assists on both goals). Abby was able to get into the action during two games. It will take a little time but there is not doubting her heart and leadership on this team. Best game was against Xpress Red (think where we would have been without her taking the field that game). Jennie was just flying throughout the tournament. She had great speed and was just a little unlucky as she had a number of chances. Her best game was against the Strikers. Emily's best game was against Xpress White. Nice goal. Emily is really looking good on the control aspect of the game and moving the ball up the field. Special kudos to Maggie for coming to each game and being such a great captain. Hurry back! WF Xpress Red (02/05/06) - Finals The girls came to play early on in this one. They played a strong first half and had a number of good shots but were unable to convert. There was a beautiful play in the first half where 4 quick passes led to a good shot but it was turned away. At the half, Odyssey trailed 1 to 0 after a nice set piece from a corner kick led to an Xpress goal. In the second half, the best chance for a score came from a pass from Jennie to Emily. Emily's shot was heading for the right corner but the keeper came over to knock it away. The Xpress would go on to score 2 more goals in the second half after injuries got the best of Odyssey. Most of the second half was played with 10 on the field (of course, this did allow Abby some additional playing time). Although the tournament grind finally got to the girls, they played hard until the end and we're certainly proud of them. Final was 3 nil. ESPN MOMENT: A second half corner kick from the Xpress almost led to a goal but Samantha was on the back post to sweep it off the line. Sam played hurt for most of the tournament and definitely deserves the award for her outstanding play and tremendous determination! North Texas Strikers - Blue (02/05/06) - Semifinals This semifinal game saw the girls playing a familiar foe - the Strikers. This was another tough hard fought game. The girls played their best game of the tournament and were able to control most of the action against a very good team. The Strikers did have a chance early in the game with a free kick outside of the box but Holly was able to make the save. Odyssey had a number of chances but were unable to convert. Both Jennie and Emily had a 1 on 1 with the keeper but were stopped each time. Just a real solid game by all of the girls in this one. After regulation and two 10 minute overtimes, the game ended 0 to 0. It was off to the shootout (Penalty Kicks)! The Strikers were able to score on their first kick as Holly didn't have a chance on a well placed ball. Sydney M. was our first shooter and she was able to convert on a well hit ball to the keeper's right (1-1). The next Strikers' player missed wide. Meagan G. was our next shooter and she buried her chance (2-1). Holly was able to save the next shot but it slipped barely over the line for the score. Rachel was next and she hit a hard shot over the keeper's head and barely over the crossbar (2-2). Holly would save the next Striker shot, which brought out Sydney R. (much to my shock). Sydney R. hit a strong shot to the keeper's left, which found the back of the net (3-2). The fifth Strikers' player needed the score for the game to continue but Holly would have none of it. She made the save and Odyssey won the game 0 to 0 (3-2 on PKs). ESPN MOMENT: Let's see...a shutout and a PK win? It's got to be Holly! Great job Holly on another fabulous game. Maybe we should just skip regulation next time and go to PKs! DFW Tejanos Elite (02/04/06) - Pool Game #3 The Claw!!! Well, Samantha keeps coming out with the hand injury and it keeps looking worse! She now had a soft cast on the hand after being taken to the doctors. This game would see the first goal against Odyssey in the tournament as the Tejanos were able to net one late in the game. Prior to that, Meagan N. scored her third goal of the tournament after a cross from Nicole (setup from Rachel). Odyssey got their second goal from Sydney M. as she sent in a long shot into the box that went off a defender's head for the goal. The girls played a lot better in this game as they won the bracket and qualified for the playoffs. Final score was 2 to 1. Emily did pickup a yellow card in this game (tackle from behind). ESPN MOMENT: Meagan G. continued her solid play in the midfield in this game. She was a calming presence in the middle and made a lot of nice passes to the forwards. Fun to watch! WF Xpress White (02/04/06) - Pool Game #2 This was setup as the easiest game in bracket play but the Xpress White brought a very good effort to the pitch. Despite this, Odyssey was able to control most of the action and come away with the win. Still, the girls were relying a lot on the dump and chase and not looking for the pass. Odyssey did score in the first half off a play that started with a Nicole back pass. Meagan G. took the pass and hit a solid shot that was initially stopped by the keeper. The keeper was unable to handle the shot cleanly and Meagan N. was able to swoop in with the follow. Leave it to Meagan N. to never give up! Odyssey scored again in the second half on a play again started by Nicole. Nicole was able to chase down a ball on the left side of the box and make a couple of moves that gave her room to cross the ball to Emily. Emily was able to finish her shot to make the game 2 nil (final score). Abby saw limited action in this one in her first game back from her foot injury. Samantha was playing in pain with her injured hand as it had swollen up since the Two Touch game. ESPN MOMENT: Another shutout so another central defender gets the award! Miranda played a very strong game and made a number of clears. She also had a scoring chance as she took the ball up the middle and made a nice shot on goal. Great effort! Abby also gets an award for this game as it was her first game back from injury. Two Touch (02/03/06) - Pool Game #1 First game of pool saw Odyssey facing the toughest opponent in their bracket. Two Touch came out strong but Odyssey was able to free up Jennie for a good run down the left side. Although the defender was able to steal the ball right before the shot, it did force a corner kick. Meagan G. got the call and crossed a beautiful ball into the box. Meagan N. was waiting on it and slammed a hard shot past the keeper for the score. The goal came in the 3 minute mark but it would be all that Odyssey needed as the defense pitched a shutout. Two Touch only had a couple of good shots all game (one wide and Holly saved the other) despite playing really well. Odyssey picked up their play late in the game but better efforts will be needed if Odyssey expects to advance. Samantha did hurt her hand as it was stepped on but did come back to play. ESPN MOMENT: Kelsey wins the award for this game. She anchored the defense to earn the shutout. She had a number of last defender sweeps and two very aggressive (and clean) slide tackles. Great Job! North Texas Strikers Fall Classic Summary: Champions! Finished 1st in pool at 3-0-0 (28 points). Defeated North Texas Strikers Blue for the championship. Team had 1 shutout, 17 goals scored and 4 gives. Overall an outstanding effort that stretched 3 days of playing over a 3 week span. Starting from the back; Holly had a great tournament. I'm sure her highlight are the 2 goals she scored in pool play but her performance in the PKs during the semifinals was HUGE! She made some great stops to get us to the finals. Sydney R. also had a great semifinal game and continues to play lock down defense on the left side. Kelsey was BIG sweeping that ball away in the finals and played fabulously the whole way. Miranda did a great job shutting down the Strikers big forward in the finals. She also had a great tournament throughout. Samantha had a couple of outstanding games and was able to get a number of assists in this tournament. Meagan G. continues to control the middle of the field. She had a number of assists and made all of her PKs in the semifinals. Rachel also made all of her PKs in the semifinals and is really doing great in the midfield. While were on the subject of PKs, Sydney M. also made all of her kicks and was really a force in the middle. Meagan N. was able to tally two goals in this tournament with one being the game winner in the finals. As always, she brings great energy every time she hits the field. Nicole was also able to net two goals with one being our only goal in the semifinal game. She did a great job marking the Strikers big defender, too. Maggie had a couple of big assists and was able to net a goal in the tournament. Outstanding play in the middle all tournament and even got to play in net for a little bit. Jennie was able to score three goals during the tournament and was a constant pain up front to the other teams. Emily was our leading scorer for the tournament as she netted 7 goals. Her efforts ensured that we made the playoffs. Of course, I can't forget about the crippled player on the team. Every time we see her it seems she has another broken bone. Thanks for coming out to cheer the girls on Captain! Get healthy Abby, we need you! North Texas Strikers Blue (11/20/05 & 12/04/05) - Finals The game on the 20th was postponed due to darkness. The game was halted at 1 to 1. Meagan G. got the goal from a corner kick. Emily had a yellow card in this game. Rough game so the girls better be ready for the make-up! The rematch was held in Keller on a very cold afternoon. The game started off poorly as the Strikers were able to score off a corner kick that bounced off an Odyssey player. For the most part, Odyssey was in control of the game but going into the strong wind they were unable to score in the first half. Midway through the second half Meagan G. was able to put a shot on goal from a free kick. The ball hit the far post and bounced to Jennie who sealed the deal tying the game at 1. There was a hold your breath moment as the ball actually went through the side netting and the center ref thought the ball went wide. Luckily the lines women had the call. A little while later, Sydney M. put the ball on goal from a serious angle that bounced off the crossbar. Despite the girl's best efforts the game ended 1 to 1. Odyssey would score in the first overtime period when Samantha sent a ball forward that found Sydney M. She sent the ball up to Meagan N. on the left side and she was able to beat the keeper with the game winning goal. The second overtime period did see the Strikers get loose on a breakaway but Holly came off her line, which forced the early shot. Holly got enough of the ball so that Kelsey could sweep it away before it reached the goal line. A great effort by all of the girls playing in very harsh conditions! ESPN MOMENT: I was first going to give this to Samantha. She really controlled the action on the right side and sent a number of long balls up the field to the forwards. Then, Kelsey makes a great play coming back to sweep the ball before the Strikers could tie the game (not to mention her all around great play). Then there was Rachel who played a great game and seemed to always be on the ball. So, I guess all three get it - Great Job Ladies! Texas Spirit East (11/20/05) - Semifinals This was a nail biter! The girls controlled the game and took an early lead when Maggie placed a great corner kick into the box that was controlled by Nicole for the score. The score would remain 1 nil until the end when a penalty kick was awarded to the Spirit. They were able to convert for the tying goal. Odyssey did have some good chances but were unable to score during regulation. Maggie did pick up a yellow card in this game. Double overtime was next but no goals were scored. This meant penalty kicks! The first round of kicks were tied 3 - 3. Meagan G., Rachel and Sydney M. were able to convert their kicks. Holly made some good saves in this round. In the next round, Odyssey would win 3-1 with Meagan G., Sydney M. and Rachel once again making their kicks. Holly's best save came on a ball over her head that she punched to the crossbar and then caromed out to the field. Final score was 1 - 1 (6-4 on penalty kicks). ESPN MOMENT: Sydney R. gets the nod in this one as she played a great game on the back line. She really controlled the action on the left side and made a great clear in the box with a header. Awesome Job! North Texas Strikers Frisco (11/20/05) - Pool Game #3 Big win for the Blue in this one. The Strikers were overmatched from the start as the girls played hard for the full game. There is way TOO much to go through here but I do want to touch on the highlights. First goal by Jennie with assists to Sydney M. and Maggie. Maggie had a nice one touch pass to Jennie. Second goal resulted from a give and go between Nicole and Emily. Emily with the goal from an impossible angle. Third goal to Jennie with assists from Meagan G. and Rachel. Fourth goal back to Emily with Samantha and Meagan N. getting the assists. Samantha really did a great job controlling the loose ball on this goal. Fifth goal to Emily from Samantha. Hat trick to Emily! Sixth goal to Holly from Jennie. Holly? Yes, the keeper was allowed out of her cage in this game. Jennie made a nice one touch pass to Holly for the breakaway. Holly stayed cool and when the keeper went right, Holly placed the shot with her left foot to the other side. Seventh goal to Meagan N. with assists to Samantha (3 for the game) and Rachel. Eighth goal to Holly again as Rachel (3rd assist) rushed the keeper and put the ball through her legs. Holly was there for the cleanup and the goal. Final score was 8 nil. ESPN MOMENT: The whole team deserves it in this one but you have to go with the goal scoring keeper. Great job to Holly playing forward for the first time this year and cashing in with two goals. Now, get back in net! River City Rangers SII (11/19/05) - Pool Game #2 The girls came out a little stronger in this game but they did seem to be suffering from and over dose of Denny's pancakes! The scoring got started with Emily as she made a nice shot to beat the keeper. Emily got a nice pass from Nicole in the box who got the ball from Jennie. After River City tied the game, Odyssey answered with another Emily goal. This was a strange one that started with a nice punt from Holly. The ball made it out to Emily who sprinted up the field. A shot resulted in a big rebound. It's at this point that things got weird. Both Rachel and Jennie jumped on the ball but couldn't score as the ball was on a big dirt area. The ball found a home with Emily who was able to score it. The third goal game with less than a minute left in the game. Sydney R. got the ball and drove to the goal. A shot led to another big rebound back to Sydney R. She was unable to do much with it due to that big dirt spot (sort of a Bermuda Triangle) but was able to direct it to Jennie. Jennie's shot hit the post but was controlled by Nicole who was able to drive the ball into the back of the net. Final 3 to 1. ESPN MOMENT: Three go out this time. Samantha played another tough game, which was needed as it was a physical contest. A number of nice clears helped on the back line. Kelsey also had numerous clears and was able to really control the action from the sweeper position. Finally, Nicole who came away with a goal and assist and played a strong two-way game. Odessa Force United (11/19/05) - Pool Game #1 Slow start to this early game. Despite outplaying their opponent, Odyssey found themselves down 1 nil at half time. Paul must have said something right at the half because the girls came out strong. Two beautiful headers by Sydney M. to control an Odessa clear followed with a nice pass to spring Emily led to the first goal. A little while later Emily was able to steal the ball and sprint in on goal. When the keeper came off her line, Emily chipped the ball over the keeper for the 2nd Odyssey goal. The last goal of the game was by Maggie who nutmeged the keeper. Two very nice passes by Meagan N. and then Rachel led to this goal. Final 3 to 1.
ESPN MOMENT: I'll give out two for this game. Rachel gets one for some great hustle and ball control. She had a couple of great chances to score but is saving them for when they are needed! Emily also gets a "moment" for that great chip shot over the keeper. That was special! Lake Highlands Division II (Fall) Summary: Final Fall record was 3-3-3 (12 points). Team had 5 goals and 5 gives. Team had 5 shutouts. Our first Lake Highlands season is over and I wanted to congratulate the girls on a fine season. They definitely exceeded expectations (ranked 10th going into the season) and there is still room for improvement. On behalf of the parents, we are so very proud of each of you and are looking forward to the spring season! To start off with, great job to Holly. I'm sure she was just waiting on the one blow out game so she could escape the net but it wasn't to be. Every game was close and a lot of that had to do with her efforts. Only 5 goals given in 9 games with 5 shutouts speak volumes of your play! It also says a lot about the defense. Starting from the left, Sydney R. did an outstanding job on some of the top forwards in Division II. She continues to improve with her left foot and ball handling. In the middle were Kelsey and Miranda. Kelsey is just the anchor in the middle clearing balls when she was the last line of defense and playing tough when the ball is in our box. Miranda always does a great job chasing down the rouge forward that happens to get by the rest of the defense. I can't count the number of times she has closed on a player and swept the ball clear prior to a shot. On the right, Samantha has really embraced the position and definitely brings a needed toughness to the back line. She plays a physical game mixed with skill that is tough to beat. Abby did great this season playing both defense and midfield. She has a huge leg that helps clear the balls from the back and is intelligent with her passes when playing the middle. Of course, she's also the most vocal of the girls and a great leader. Maggie played mainly midfield and is another great leader on the team. She is also extremely intelligent with the ball and is a joy to watch as she always tries to find the open player. Meagan G. is a fighter in the middle and really helps control the action with her skill. She's another player with a huge leg and is always dangerous on the set pieces. Nicole did a great job in the middle and so dangerous with the ball in the box. She has a knack for finding the open player down close and is so unselfish with the ball. Sydney M. seems like she can play any position equally well. She's a force in the middle with her skill and attacks the ball in the air with numerous headers. Speaking of headers, Rachel is another player that does well in the air. Rachel also excels near the opponents goal whether it's a shot from outside of the box or jumping on a loose ball for the score. Megan N. has played strong all season and she is one of our toughest players. She never backs down and excels at the 50/50 balls. Her passing continues to improve and she can really serve up a nice cross on the run. The main forwards this season were Jennie and Emily. Jennie brings size and speed to the position and is a force up front with her ball control skills and shot placement. Emily brings blazing speed to the position and is fun to watch on the breakaway. You can really see her improving with her ball control as she sets up her shot or pass. Once again, on behalf of the parents it is so much fun watching you each play and grow your skills together. Keep practicing and playing hard and we'll keep cheering. Remember, win or lose; we love you! Go Odyssey! Here are the league game summaries: East Texas Spirit (10/29/05) - Game #9 In the final game of league play, the girls could finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th. At the end of the day the girls would drop this game 2 to 1 and see themselves in a tie for 5th place. Spirit scored early and late in this one with Odyssey's lone goal coming early in the second half. A nice run by a Spirit forward and a well placed strong shot for the score opened the game at the 6 minute mark and with about 1 minute left in the game she would score again off of a goal kick. The Odyssey score started with Emily making a nice pass to Jennie who took the shot. The ball hit the near post and bounced to Rachel who was setup on the far post for the score. Not a great way to end the Fall league but the team did well and will hopefully contend in the Spring season. ESPN MOMENT: We'll let's see...who's "special" day was it? I think I heard that phrase a 100 or so times. I guess if it was your "special" day then you should be honored for it! Great job today Abby. You played well at midfield being aggressive and making some nice passes. Oh, and happy birthday! Tornados White (10/22/05) - Game #8 I had to miss this one but from the reports I heard the girls did not bring their best game to this contest. The Tornados played tough and controlled more of the action in this one. The girls were able to escape with a 0 to 0 tie. The highlight would have to be Holly saving the ball (and the game) off a Tornados PK. The girls will have to step it up a notch for their final game next week as they attempt to secure either 3rd or 4th place in league. ESPN MOMENT: Holly wins the award this week. She made some amazing saves all game to secure the shutout (the 5th in league play this season). Holly also had to go all out for a PK save diving to the side and knocking the ball out of bounds. Way to go Holly! Solar Blue (10/15/05) - Game #7 With no Emily for this one and a tough opponent to face, it could have been a long day for Odyssey. For the first 10 minutes it looked this way as Solar Blue controlled most of the action. After the girls settled down, they were able to control most of the play after that. Solar had a couple of good chances but sent the ball over the crossbar in both attempts. Holly also made a nice save on a hard driven ball in the second half. But this story is about Odyssey and did they play well. Improved passing really helped in this one! The first half ended 0 to 0 but Jennie did have one break down the left side but was caught by a Solar defender, she would not be denied the next time. Defense played well as they pitched another shutout and they got a lot of good help from the midfielders. With about 10 minutes into the second half Odyssey was applying good pressure but Solar was able to clear the ball towards midfield. Abby stepped up and launched a ball back into the box. Jennie was able to control it and after a little move to the right she sent a shot in the far netting for the game's only goal. Girls played well and kept their hopes for finishing in the top 2 alive with the victory. ESPN MOMENT: The whole team could get one today but I wanted to recognize a few players that in addition to playing great today haven't received a lot of attention. So great job to Maggie for playing tough and just being so smart on the pitch. Also great job to Nicole for helping back on defense from the midfield position and always looking for that pass (do you realize that Nicole is the team's #1 playmaker with 6 assists?) And finally, great job to Meagan N. for playing strong on the ball and never backing down. She had a great run in the second half where she fought for the ball took it into the corner and made a nice cross into the box. Texans Red South (10/08/05) - Game #6 Playing without two players and only 1 sub, Odyssey Blue was still able to control most of the action against the Texans. In the first half, the Texans were able to score on a breakaway with a shot just outside of Holly's reach (she had come off her line to challenge the shot). In the second half, Odyssey was able to tie the game after a scramble in the Texans' box. The ball bounced out to Emily who put in a nice shot over the keeper's head. Odyssey did have a number of other chances to score but were unable to convert. Earlier in the game, Samantha was able to block and clear a ball from in front of Blue's net to keep Odyssey down by only a goal. Final score was 1 to 1. ESPN MOMENT: With two defenders missing, the "moment" needs to go to the girls that filled in (and did a great job in the process). Sydney M. did a great job on the back line and Rachel also had her moment on the defensive side playing an unfamiliar position and doing a tremendous job. Thanks girls! DFW Tejanos Classic (10/01/05) - Game #5 First game ever at Frisco! Odyssey came out a little ragged in this game against an opponent they should beat. They were still able to generate some good pressure at times and the defense wasn't giving them many chances. Towards the end of the first half a ball found its way into the box from a corner kick that Emily was finally able to kick past the keeper. There really was no way to determine the assists but my best guess was Meagan G. and Jennie (Let me know if I'm wrong). The play was back and forth and there were not a lot of shots from either team. Still a good effort to finish the game strong and not allow a goal. Another shutout for Holly (final 1 nil). ESPN MOMENT: I'll give the nod to Sydney R. this time around. She had a nice slide tackle in the box and once again played a solid left defense. She also had a number of clears when the Tejanos got the ball in the box. "Hey Sydney! You just won the ESPN MOMENT! What are you doing next?" Spirit North (09/24/05) - Game #4 Hurricane Rita missed the DFW area but her winds were a factor in this game. Odyssey started with the wind at their backs in the first half but couldn't seem to put anything together. Spirit seemed to control most of the action. Having said that, most of the chances went to Odyssey. A couple of balls were sitting in the box but wouldn't cross the goal line. Sydney M. had a shot off the post and Rachel just missed wide on another scoring chance. Spirit only had one real good chance but it was enough as it went to the left of Holly for the game's only score. In the second half, going against the wind, Odyssey picked up their play and again had a couple of chances but was unable to score. Game ended 1 to nil. Samantha did pick up a yellow card in this game. ESPN MOMENT: None of the girls really stood out in this one as they all played pretty even. So for this "moment" I think it's time to recognize Abby for her leadership skills and great play. It doesn't matter if she's playing defense or the midfield, Abby is a skilled player and a vocal leader. Even after the game you saw her leadership with the never ending spanking line! Solar White (09/17/05) - Game #3 Game three of league played saw Blue going against some old friends. I know the girls were wanting the victory (especially on Paul's birthday), but they had to settle for the 0 to 0 tie. The game was very even with both sides getting their chances. Blue did have two free kicks outside of the box and couldn't convert. The second was a beautiful ball by Meagan G. that was stopped by the keeper. The girls played tough and didn't back down (Samantha, Sydney M. and Rachel stuck out in my mind). The defense was strong again in this one and the forwards had their chances (a very tight call ended a run by Jennie in the box). Three games into the league and it has become obvious that this team can play with any of them. ESPN MOMENT: This game the "moment" is going out to Sydney M. She was really aggressive in the mid-field and didn't back down from the contact. She also had no problems heading a heavy water logged ball (she's got mom's good looks and dad's hard head, I guess)! WF Xpress (09/12/05) - Game #2 Good effort by the girls. The game was pretty evenly played. Wichita Falls was able to hit a nice shot to score the game's only goal. Final 0 to 1. Blue did have their chances. Jennie got a nice feed for a breakaway but the keeper was able to make the save. Meagan G. just missed from the top of the box with a free kick. There were a number of other chances in the box. It was good to see the girls call the offside trap play on a free kick before Paul got there. When Paul called it in the second half I think it scared the other team so much they forgot about scoring! ESPN MOMENT: Now you have to be special to earn the "moment" and you have to be real special to earn it if you are playing forward or midfield. So how special was Coach Cecil for winning it for this game?!? Quite funny to see Cecil show up late (and after Paul) with the net in hand. Special kudos to the parents who "acquired" a net prior to the game. Sting Martin (09/11/05) - Game #1 Wow! What an effort in this one. Odyssey drew the #1 ranked team in their first game and dispatched them 1 to nil. Odyssey was able to control the first half with the wind at their back. Sting really didn't have any chances but the few shots Odyssey had were all stopped. In the second half Sting had the wind and was able to control the action a little better. The defense did a great job holding them off but Sting was able to get one shot off that hit the top of the crossbar. The rest of their chances found a home in Holly's arms. Odyssey was able to put some pressure on Sting in the second half. On one of these runs, Odyssey had the ball deep in the Sting side of the field with a throw-in. Nicole was able to grab the loose ball and work it towards the box. She sent a beautiful cross into the box that found Emily. Emily was then able to chip the ball over the keeper's head for the game's only score. A late breakaway by Sting was the only remaining threat and Sydney R. was able to race over and get a piece of the shot before Holly made the save. It was a great team effort and a fantastic way to start the season! ESPN MOMENT: When you pitch a shutout against the #1 team, the keeper must have been good and Holly was! She made a couple of very nice saves and sealed the deal when she stopped the only Sting breakaway at the end of the game. Plano Labor Day Tournament Summary: Finished 2nd in pool at 2-1-0 (17 points). Lost to FC Texas in the quarterfinals. Team had 7 goals scored and 5 gives. Overall the girls did well in a very tough tournament. Starting from the back Holly did a super job in goal. She made a great save in the North Texas Strikers game off of a free kick and a beautiful save off a misdirected ball in the quarterfinals. The defense was mainly Sydney R., Samantha, Miranda and Kelsey. All four did a fantastic job against some tough forwards. Sydney R. was just plain solid as left back not letting much by and sweeping a number of balls out of the box. Samantha played a tough right back and shutdown the Strikers top forward with good physical play. Kelsey played strong all tournament with some great clears. Miranda used her speed to chase down a number of breakaways during the tournament. Abby played mostly midfield and really controlled the action. She had a number of nice slide tackles. Meagan G. played great and was able to score a couple of goals with her booming kicks. Meagan N. played mostly midfield with some forward time. She had a nice rebound goal in the quarterfinals and probably performed the first after goal celebration we've seen - nice job! Sydney M. was able to garner an assist during the tournament. She played tough in all four and was really aggressive going after the loose balls. Nicole again had a couple of assists during this tournament. She played strong on both days and really does well in the midfield. Rachel was often showing off her moves and was able to free up for a goal and an assist during the tournament. Maggie (or "Spot") gutted it out and did well despite the week layoff. Strong physical play in the quarterfinals! Emily showed off her speed a number of times and was able to notch a goal and an assist during the tournament. Not sure she'll remember them after getting that ball kicked off her head! Jennie played another good tournament up front scoring two goals and an assist. Nice to see the PK shots hit so well! Here are the game reports: FC Texas (9/04/05) - Quarterfinals Tough game! FC Texas really came out swinging (no pun intended). They played a skilled game and were very physical. Our girls met the challenge and were able to score first. Nicole grabbed the ball just inside the box and put a shot on goal. The keeper made the save but had it go off to the right where Meagan N. was waiting to slam it home. At this point Meagan N. let everyone know who scored the goal. The score remained 1 to nil until the second half. Due to the physical nature of the game, a few of our girls got hurt but were able to return at some point in the game. Holly made a very nice save off a misdirected ball early in the second half. It looked like Odyssey would hold off FC Texas but a strange penalty at the top of the box led to an FC Texas free kick and their only score in regulation. The game would end 1 to 1. Double overtime was next and the girls continued to play tough. No score in the first one. Three minutes in the second overtime saw FC Texas score the go ahead goal. Odyssey was unable to score in the final minutes. Final score 1 to 2. Meagan G. was given a yellow card in this game, but I didn't see the cause of it. ESPN MOMENT: Kelsey continued her great tournament with a number of long clears. She was taken down in the box in the second half but was able to return to the game later. Way to tough it out! North Texas Strikers Blue (9/04/05) - Pool Play This game meant something. This team beat us in the Keller Classic and then implied we didn't have the skill to compete with them. Guess they were watching a different game then but I'm sure they saw this one. The first half saw a short kick from the goalie get stolen by Meagan G. She was able to advance it forward and then launch it over the out of position keeper for the first goal of the game. In the second half Nicole was able to send a long ball up to Emily who was able to feed Jennie for the breakaway. Jennie did the rest as she beat the keeper up high. The Strikers were able to score their only goal on weird penalty at the top of the box. The free kick was put in over Holly who didn't have a chance on it. Odyssey wasn't done, however, as they scored two more goals. Sydney M. was able to find Rachel who then took the ball down the left side before passing to Emily for the score. The last goal was off a free kick by Maggie into the box. Jennie was able to knock it down and get it to Rachel for the score. A lot of skill was on display by Odyssey in this one. Great job on the payback! ESPN MOMENT: Samantha played tough all game and shutdown the Strikers top forward. Samantha was very physical and never gave any ground. Great job! Lubbock Lonestar (9/03/05) - Pool Play Not our best effort in this very late game on Saturday. Although we were able to control the game, Blue was unable to put anything away. Lubbock was able to spring their best forward for one of their few shots of the game. This one was well placed and accounted for the only goal of the game. ESPN MOMENT: Although I like to concentrate on the defense for these moments, this one has to go out to Spot (Maggie) for convincing her parents to let her play. I guess you could say that she was just itching to get out there. She might have even wished a pox on her family if they didn't let her. Seriously, Maggie came out strong despite the weeklong layoff and played a good game. It was good to have her back on the field! Albion Hurricanes Black (9/03/05) - Pool Play The first game of pool was a tough one. Albion was a physical team that committed a number of fouls. Albion did seem to control at least half of the game but was very lucky to get their goal. The luck would turn in the second half to our favor when Jennie and Emily had the ball between them in the box. Both turned away from it but then Jennie came back to it only to get elbowed off the ball. A PK was called and Jennie stepped up and delivered a laser to the back of the net only to get it waved off (an Odyssey player moved too soon into the box). Undaunted, Jennie hit the same shot again to tie the score at one. A little while later Albion would be called for another foul just outside of the box. Meagan G. got the chance and delivered a beautiful ball over the keeper's head for the game winner. A rough game to start the tournament but it would be a sign of things to come. ESPN MOMENT: Miranda was chasing down everything in this game. All Albion breakaways were halted by her excellent play and she had another great play to sweep the ball out of the box when it looked like Albion was going to shoot. Fort Worth FC Kick-Off-Classic Tournament Summary: Champions! Finished 2nd in pool at 2-0-1 (22 points). Defeated Polaris Blue for the championship. Team had 3 shutouts, 13 goals scored and 3 gives. Overall the girls played great together. Starting from the back Holly was again solid in goal. Some of the punts she did in the finals were amazing. The defense (with Holly) pitched 3 shutouts out of 4 games. Sydney R., Abby and Samantha anchored the left and right sides of the defense. All three did well against some very fast and physical forwards. Miranda and Kelsey once again cleaned up any mess that occurred and really communicated well all tournament with the other defenders and the midfield. Meagan G. (who also played some defense) really shined controlling the game in the middle of the field. Meagan N. and Sydney M. were both very aggressive and won a number of 50/50 balls. Nicole made some very nice passes in the box that led to goals and was vital in the Hurst United victory. Rachel and Maggie both showed some nice moves and each were able to score goals during the tournament. Emily and Jennie showed their stuff up front converting on a number of nice passes and were once again very aggressive. All of the girls really did well under very tough conditions this weekend. Speaking for all of the parents, we are very proud of each of you! Here are the game reports: Polaris 95 Blue (8/21/05) - Finals Odyssey came ready to play (perhaps thinking that Peggy was coaching) as they controlled the action throughout the first half. The girls had a number of scoring chances but were turned away by a tough Polaris keeper. No real chances by Polaris in the first half as the defense played strong. Coming out for the second half saw an explosion of goals (and chances) by Odyssey. In the first 7 minutes Odyssey was able to net 2 goals. The first came on a nice switch by Nicole to Maggie who found Rachel on the right wing. Rachel was able to beat the keeper with a nice kick from just inside the box. The second goal game when Jennie worked the ball up the middle of the field and passed it to Emily. Emily gave the ball right back and Jennie was able to finish it with a shot over the keepers head. The final score came in the final minutes as Megan N. was able to feed Jennie with a nice pass. Jennie then nutmeged a Polaris player in order to get the ball to Maggie who did the rest with a nice shot past the keeper. The defense (Kelsey, Miranda, Samantha, Abby, Sydney R. and Meagan G.) played great all game and Polaris was only able to mount a couple of scoring chances in the second half (final score 3 to nil). Great effort by the team to win their first tournament championship! ESPN MOMENT: Sydney M. has a series where she aggressively stops two different Polaris players from clearing the ball and then chases a third player down bumping her off the ball (and to the ground). Tough work in 100 degree heat! Fort Worth FC Red (incorrectly labeled as White on schedule) (8/20/05) - Pool Play In a late night affair, the team was shocked to learn of Coach Paul's ejection from the 94 girls game. He would serve his 1 game suspension during this match. A call for coaches echoed through the night and as luck would have it, Peggy answered it. Coming off major surgery there was some talk of whether she was up to the task. Have no fear, by the end of the night, Odyssey would have their first lifetime undefeated coach in club history (did someone say "ring of honor"?) In a game shorten by the lack of daylight, Odyssey would smoke the Fort Worth FC team 6 to nil. Holly only had to punt once during the game as Blue controlled the action. Emily scored 3 goals with Maggie and Abby each netting one. Fort Worth FC also had an own goal. Assists went out to Emily, Rachel and Maggie. ESPN MOMENT: The entire team earned the nod as they played a complete game. Hurst United (8/20/05) - Pool Play In the hottest game of the day, the usually stout defense struggled (giving up more than 2 goals for the first time ever). The offense, however, picked up the slack as they were able to secure a 4 to 3 victory. The scoring started for Odyssey with Sydney M. getting the ball to Nicole who passed up a shot to make a nice little pass to Jennie who slammed the ball into the net. The second goal was almost a carbon copy (kids ask your parents what that means) as Sydney M. once again found Nicole with the ball in the box. Again, Nicole passes on a tough shot to feed (this time) Emily who virtually had the entire net to shot at. When Hurst exploded for 2 goals in the second half to take the lead (2-3), Odyssey came back when Sydney R. made a nice clearing pass up to Abby who controlled the ball and passed forward to Jennie. Jennie did the rest as she tied the game at 3's. With time running out, Jennie was able to secure the ball in the box and make a nice back pass to Sydney M. who hit a laser over the keeper and just under the crossbar for the game winner. A tough game in tough conditions. ESPN MOMENT: The defense had a tough day but Sydney R. gets the nod as she took a tough foul from a Hurst forward only to keep on playing. The Hurst player was given a yellow card for her act. Fort Worth FC White (incorrectly labeled as Red on schedule) (8/20/05) - Pool Play The first game of pool did not go smoothly. Fort Worth came out strong and played the Blue even. No team was able to really control the action except for a few moments here and there. A Coach Paul run in with the referee foretold the events later in the day and provided the most excitement during this game as it ended nil to nil. Odyssey did have a couple of nice scoring chances with one going just wide and another just going over the crossbar. Fort Worth had a couple of chances but Holly and the defense turned them away. ESPN MOMENT: A beautiful play started by Megan N. almost leads to victory. Meagan N. switched the ball to Emily who one touched it to Jennie. Jennie raced forward and beat the keeper with a high shot that just sailed over the crossbar. Lake Highlands Qualification Tournament Summary (Second Weekend): Finished 2nd in pool at 1-1-1 (13 points). Team had 1 shutout, 5 goals scored and 3 gives. The team qualified for Lake Highlands Division 2!!!! Texans White North (8/7/05) - Pool Play Final game of pool and the last chance for Odyssey to make Division II. They would need to win big and get some help from the Spirit in the other pool play game. Blue started off a little slow but quickly came back to control most of this game. Early in the first half Jennie took a nice pass from Rachel to score the first Odyssey goal of the tournament. The Texans came back to tie the game off of a great individual play. Blue would come back quick! Jennie added a second goal after she stole the ball from the sweeper and sprinted in on goal. Jennie would earn the first ever 95 Odyssey Hat Trick after Abby made a nice throw-in to Meagan G. who found Jennie with the pass. Jennie did the rest to put Blue up 3 to 1. More scoring, this time from Rachel, after Nicole grabbed a loose ball on the left side and passed the ball to Jennie. Jennie switched the ball into the box where Emily was able to pass it to Rachel alone on the right side. Rachel hit a nice shot that nicked the crossbar and went in to put Blue up 4 to 1. The scoring ended in the second half when Maggie had the ball at the top of the box. She was able to back pass to Sydney M. who hit a laser for the final score (5 to 1). Spirit also did their job in winning 3 to 0, which meant that Odyssey qualified for Division II. ESPN MOMENT: Too many to mention! Since the offense is covered, I will highlight the good defensive efforts of Kelsey and Sam. Both made a number of nice plays to keep the Texans at only 1 goal. Texas Spirit North (8/6/05) - Pool Play This is a rematch of the Puma Quarterfinals game. After a rain delay, Blue plays tough and keeps the score 0 to 0 at halftime. Late in the game a hand ball in the box gives Spirit a 1 to nil lead off a penalty kick. Another late goal on a play that appeared to be offsides puts the final score at 2 to nil. ESPN MOMENT: Sydney R. dives and is able to sweep the ball off of the goal line to keep the score at 0 to 0 for the time being. FC Texas (8/6/05) - Pool Play The second weekend starts off like last weekend ends with a 0 to 0 tie. FC Texas played well and controlled slightly more of the game. Blue again struggled to score but did have some great chances in the first half just feet from the goal line. ESPN MOMENT: Miranda chases down an FC Texas breakaway in the first half and Holly comes off her line to stop another breakaway in the 2nd half. Summary (First Weekend): Finished 3rd in pool at 0-1-2 (8 points). Team had 2 shutouts, 0 goals scored and 2 gives. Team qualified for Lake Highlands and will battle for Division 2 or 3 status next week. DFW Tejanos Elite (7/31/05) - Pool Play Another dominating effort by Odyssey that only resulted in a 0-0 tie. The girls had a number of good shots but were turned away each time. The defense again did well and Holly didn't see much action in goal because of it. The tie did allow Blue to advance to next weekend! ESPN MOMENT: Jennie took the ball on the right side just outside Blue's box and raced down the sidelines. She beat at least 3 Tejanos and had just the goalie remaining. Unfortunately, the ball went just wide. Solar (7/30/05) - Pool Play Turn about was fair play in this game. As much as we controlled the Tejanos in game 1 of the day, Solar was able to do the same to Blue in this one. Solar was able to jump out to an early lead right after the kickoff and then add to it following the kickoff in the second half. Blue was unable to penetrate a good Solar defense and did well to keep the final score at 2 to nil. ESPN MOMENT: Holly made a number of nice saves to keep the score where it ended. DFW Tejanos Classic (7/30/05) - Pool Play First game in pool and the girls came out strong. Pretty much dominated the action until a few minutes late in the game. The defense was able to shutdown the Tejanos as there wasn't a serious shot on goal all game. Unfortunately, the Tejanos defense was equal to the task as they also did not allow a goal. Blue did have more shots but none found their mark. Game ended 0 to 0. ESPN MOMENT: The central defense (Miranda & Meagan G.) was able to clear the ball late in the game to turn away the only real threat generated by the Tejanos. 2005 PUMA Cup Tournament Summary: Finished 2nd in pool at 2-1-0 (18 points). Team had 2 shutouts, 4 goals scored and 1 against. Lost in Quarterfinals. Texas Spirit North (7/24/05) - Quarterfinals Overall a great effort by Odyssey in this early morning wild card game against the Texas Spirit. The Spirit jumped out early with a goal to take the early lead. The defense played very well and continued to hold off a tough Spirit offense with their aggressive play. Later in the first half, Emily starts an awesome breakaway only to get knocked off the ball earning a free kick. Meagan G. serves the ball into the box where Emily finishes the play with the tying goal. The defense and midfield continue to play well in the second half but with around 3 minutes left a loose ball in the backfield leads to the game winning Spirit goal. Late pressure by Odyssey isn't enough and the games ends 2 to 1. ESPN MOMENT: Holly dives and catches a Spirit corner to save a possible goal. DFW Tejanos 95 Classic (7/23/05) - Pool Play Tough game in the heat as Odyssey held off the Tejanos offense but struggled to keep up consistent offensive pressure. Late in the half an "unlucky" play (as Paul would say) put the Tejanos up 1 to nothing. The second half again saw great defensive and keeper play and no goals were scored on either side. Late in the game, the Odyssey offense had two great chances at the tie but were turned away. Game ends 1 to nil. ESPN MOMENT: Meagan G. sends a shot over the goal from around midfield. Texas Lightning Black (7/23/05) - Pool Play The second game of the tournament started slowly for Odyssey. Early in the first half neither time was able to take control of the game. Odyssey was able to jump out to the lead when Emily placed a shot over the keeper's head. The second half saw a determined Odyssey team take control as Rachel was able to net 2 goals (the first from an assist by Emily and the second that hit off the goal post and in). The defense played strong and pitched their second shutout of the tournament. ESPN MOMENT: Holly held off a high shot on goal with a spectacular catch with her left hand! Two Touch (7/22/05) - Pool Play The first game of the tournament was fast paced with Odyssey dominating the action. The Blue defense was strong and foiled nearly all attempts on goal. There were a number of great shots and crosses (Meagan N., Rachel, Sam and Maggie). The only goal of the game came when Jennie snatched a loose ball from the Two Touch defense and placed it just out of the keeper's reach. Defense finishes with the shutout. Oh, and this game sees the first yellow card given to a Blue player (Maggie). ESPN MOMENT: A number of great throw-ins by Abby that helps keep the action pinned down in the attacking zone. |
